Nadia Comaneci, (born November 12th of November, 1961 Gheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now OnestiGheorghe Gheorghiu-Dej [now Onesti Romania) Romanian gymnast who was the first gymnast in history to receive a score of a perfect of 10 points in the Olympic competition. Bela Karolyi, later Romanian gymnastics coach, discovered Comaneci when she was just 6 years old. Her first competition was at the junior national championships in 1969, finishing 13th. After that, in 1973 and 1974 she won the overall junior champion. In her first senior competition in the year 1975, she defeated Russian Lyudmila Turkishcheva, the five-time European champion, winning four golds and a silver. In 1976 she became the first person in the world who used a double backwards salto for a dismount off the parallel bars.
